Welcome to The Portland Hotel, a small family run hotel located in the harbour village of Lybster made famous during the filming of Netflix hit The Crown.
Sitting perfectly on the North Coast 500 route at the Quatre Bras crossroad the hotel is ideally placed being just a short drive from Wick, John O’ Groats, Thurso and the perfect destination for an overnight stay when catching the early ferry to Orkney and further afield to Shetland.
The hotel holds a unique history and is known for its award winning locally sourced food, hearty portions with comfortable, individually styled rooms and friendly staff.

    A lovely place. First impressions, the car park was spotless. Our room was again good quality with comfortable beds and a nice en suite bathroom. Having travelled all around Scotland for the last 10 days, this is without doubt the best hotel we have stayed in. We had dinner and the service and quality of food was excellent. I could not fault this hotel in any way and would recommend it for a very pleasant stay.

    As I understand it a recently reopened hotel on the North Coast 500 route. the staff were very attentive and accommodating, with the restaurant very busy. the food was of a high standard and portions, typically Scottish. As I had to leave before breakfast was due to be served, a lovely 'breakfast box' was made up for me. if you're in the area, deinitely worth a drop in.

    The welcome, rooms, staff, food all excellent-cannot fault it. Everything was wonderful. We had a starter and main meal in the evening which was good value for money. Bedroom and bathroom were spotlessly clean and well equipped. Good choice at breakfast. Will definitely stay here again. 5/5

  • “Perfect Stop Along The 500”

    The staff is awesome! The food is amazing! We had an early morning ferry to catch to Orkney and they graciously had our breakfast ready by our door super early that morning. They even took special requests. The rooms are comfortable, large bathroom, nothing fancy, but very clean and well appointed. It was a great location to explore the area.

A Hotel With Highland History

In the summer of 2018, The Portland Hotel reopened under new ownership bringing a new lease of life to the village of Lybster. Built in 1851 and the premier venue in Caithness for weddings and other functions, the historic building had fallen into disrepair and was sorely missed. Following a sympathetic renovation which ensured its historic character was retained, we are pleased to now have the doors open and welcome guests to our family run Portland Hotel. Located on the North Coast 500 route we are perfectly placed for visitors to John o’ Groats.
